DIY Laundry Detergent

Have you ever seen the “Free and Clear” laundry detergents in the store and wondered, if there is a ”free of toxins“ version of detergent, I wonder what exactly is in the regular detergent?

Turns out there is a ton of harmful chemicals in laundry detergent.  Just a few to look out for are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS (the most common), Phosphates, Formaldehyde, Chlorine Bleach, Dioxane, Ammonium Sulphate, Optical Brighteners, Ammonium Quaternary Sanitizers, Nonoxynol NPE’s, Fragrance, Dyes, Benzyl Acetate and Dichlorobenzene are on the short list of dangerous toxins in your detergents!!!  And yes the “free or clear” versions also contain harmful ingredients too.  The label is made to look “safer” however its worth the time and effort to do your research.  Not all the ingredients will most likely be listed on the container.  Unlike the nutritional facts listed on your food;  the ingredients in your laundry detergents, lotions, soaps etc do not have the same requirements.  You sometimes have to look a little further to find them, not to mention the side effects.

It would take a while to list all the harmful side effects of these ingredients so I encourage you to do a little google search on those I listed above.  You can also download an app called Think Dirty as well to find what grade your laundry detergent gets.

Did you know your largest organ is your skin?  It absorbs every substance, lotion, soap, shampoo, medicine (think hormone patches), toxin or otherwise we use.   Maybe one or two will not do much visible harm, but imagine day after day of adding toxin after toxin to your skin.  The build up of harmful toxins having to filter out of your body is huge.  That is hard on your body’s filtering system, especially if you have any underlying health conditions to add to that.   It’s a simple change just to eliminate even a few of these harmful daily products to cut down on your body’s burden of chemicals.

Here is one of my favorites:  DIY Laundry Detergent

Note:  If you aren’t into DIY, you can search this site for the Thieves Laundry Detergent and it also works great!  It’s a concentrate so you can make 3 bottles from one!  You can purchase directly from the site or you can contact me to order for you.

Ingredients:

3/4 cup Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda

1 1/2 cup Baking Soda

3/4 cup Castile soap (I like Dr Bronners, any scent is fine)

1/4 cup Thieves Household Cleaner concentrate (If you don’t already have some, You can do a quick search above and order your household cleaner direct from this site, you can purchase one bottle at retail or we also have a starter set of thieves that includes 2 bottles plus several other items for a wholesale price)

Instructions:

Add washing soda and baking soda to a 2.5 gallon bucket.  Add enough hot water to dissolve those ingredients fully.  Lift out any undissolved powder lumps, they will likely not dissolve.  Fill the bucket almost to the top.  Add Castile soap and Thieves cleaner last to avoid too many bubbles.  Stir well to incorporate all the ingredients.  Spoon or pour into empty laundry soap containers.  (I usually add a large funnel to the container and spoon it out of the bucket with a big ladle until it reaches a weight that is pourable.)

Yields at least 4-5 full containers depending on the size.  I used 10 smaller bottles this time and it filled nearly all to the top!!!  So despite the peace of mind I have knowing the products I’m using are safe, it also saves me money!!!
